Top Things to Do in Nainital: A First-Time Visitor's Guide
From a quiet boat ride on Naini Lake to sunset at Hanuman Garhi, here are the places and experiences worth building a first trip around.
1. Spend time on Naini Lake
The lake is the reason Nainital exists as a holiday town. Take a boat out in the morning when the water is still, or in the late afternoon when the hills turn gold. Walking the lake's edge is just as rewarding. Agree the boat fare and duration at the boat stand before you start.
2. Stroll Mall Road
Mall Road runs along the lake and is the town's social heart, with shops, cafes, street snacks and views at every turn. Come once in daylight and once in the evening, when the lights reflect on the water.
3. Visit Naina Devi Temple
Naina Devi Temple on the north shore of the lake is the town's best-known shrine and a significant place of pilgrimage. Visit early in the day to avoid queues, and dress modestly.
4. Ride the ropeway to Snow View Point
A ropeway carries visitors up to Snow View Point, where on a clear day you can see the snow-capped Himalayan range, including Nanda Devi on the best mornings. Go early, because clouds often build by late morning, and check the ropeway timings on the day.
5. Walk or drive up to Naina Peak
Naina Peak, also called China Peak, is the highest point near the town. The climb is rewarded with wide views of the lake, the plains and, in clear weather, the Himalaya. Wear proper shoes and carry water.
6. See Tiffin Top
Tiffin Top, also known as Dorothy's Seat, is a viewpoint reached by a short trek or a horse ride through pine forest. It is a favourite picnic and photography spot.
7. Explore Eco Cave Gardens
Eco Cave Gardens is a family-friendly attraction with a series of cave-like walkways and garden paths. It suits children and is a good rainy-day option when the lake views are hidden by cloud.
8. Watch the sunset at Hanuman Garhi
Hanuman Garhi is a peaceful hilltop temple on the Tallital side, close to our hotel, and one of the town's best places to watch the sunset over the hills.
9. Take a walk on Thandi Sadak
Thandi Sadak is a quiet, tree-lined walk with views of the lake and the hills. It is flat, gentle and ideal for an unhurried morning or evening stroll.
10. Visit the zoo near Snow View
The high-altitude zoo near Snow View is home to Himalayan species and is a good stop for families. Check the opening days before you go.
11. Go to Kainchi Dham
Kainchi Dham, a well-known ashram and temple in the hills, is a short drive from Nainital and draws many visitors. Go on a weekday if you can, as weekends are crowded.
12. Add the nearby lakes
Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal are lakes within a drive of Nainital, each with its own character. Read our day trips from Nainital guide to plan them.
How many days do you need?
Two to three days cover the main sights in town. Add one or two more if you want the nearby lakes and viewpoints, or if you prefer a slow pace with long breaks on the balcony.
Staying on the Tallital side keeps you close to Hanuman Garhi and Thandi Sadak while Mall Road and the lake are a short ride away. Browse our lake view rooms or see Nainital tour packages to plan the trip.
